Jan Hooks, who made us roar on Saturday Night Live with her hysterical impressions of everyone from Tammy Faye Bakker to Bette Davis, hit a home run last night with a memorable comeback on NBC’s hit show, 30 Rock, as Jenna’s over-the-top mom, Verna.
Hooks, you may remember, helped SNL regain its popularity, starting in 1986, with two other new cast members, Phil Hartman and Dana Carvey. She left the show in 1991, taking on Jean Smart’s role in Designing Women and later, a recurring role on 3rd Rock from the Sun. She was last seen in 2004’s Jiminy Glick in Lalawood, according to IMDB.
In last night’s episode, in which Hooks guest starred, Verna comes to town to see daughter Jenna (Jane Krakowski), who agonizes over how to deal with her controlling, chain-smoking mom.
Jenna didn’t have a thing to worry about though, it seems. Verna was all sweetness and light, telling Jack (Alec Baldwin) that she was in town to throw a surprise party for her little girl. “It’s at a fancy restaurant, so wear something nice, like a pair of white jeans and a Dan Marino jersey,” she tells the always dapper network executive.

In one of the show’s funniest scenes, Verna stands before the crowd at the party, asking Jenna to join her in a duet. “Honey, I don’t deserve a single thing from you,” Verna says to her daughter. “But I’ve got to ask one favor. And it’s a big one. If you would do me the very great honor of joining me … Hit it!’
With a wide-eyed Jack and Liz (Tina Fey) looking on, Verna belts out a cheesy Captain and Tenille hit, singing to her daughter, “Do that to me one more time. Once is never enough, with a daughter like you….”
Daughter Jenna joins in, singing back to Verna, “Do that to me one more time. I can never get enough of a mom like you, oh-oh-oh…”
The mother and daughter duo raise lots of eyebrows when they sing, “Kiss me, like you just did….”
Now we know why Jenna is so wacky…
Since Hooks was such a hit, we’d love to see more of her on 30 Rock. And some other SNL alums, for that matter. Think of what Dana Carvey and Victoria Jackson could do on that show.
The staff of TGS suffers from winter blues. To try to cheer them up, Pete and Liz appeal to Jack to take the cast on a road trip to Miami in a clever “Miami = Synergy” pitch. Jack loves the idea, but instead of Miami, he determines that they’ll be going to Boston, largely because of the fact that Nancy, his high school crush, lives there.

This totally ruins the idea of trying to beat the winter since it’s even colder in Boston than in New York, naturally.
When they arrive in Boston, adjustments are hard for much of the cast and writers, but Jack settles right in with a replica of his office waiting for him.
She soon admits that her husband left her to go to New Orleans and she doesn’t know what step to take next.
Liz tries to raise the spirits of the staff by encouraging them to see Boston. However, only Tracy accompanies her on a tour of the city where he promptly gets into a shouting match with men dressed up as the Founding Fathers.
Liz must find a scapegoat for all of their problems who she names as a major employee at NBC, Dale Snitterman. The only problem with this is that Snitterman is actually a real person at the office in Boston.
Meanwhile, Jack has come up with his own genius plan to help Nancy move on – convincing TGS cast members to go to her open house and pretend as if they’re interested in buying it.

Actor Jack McBrayer dreads the day Alec Baldwin leaves “30 Rock” – because he’s convinced the hit U.S. show will fail without him. Fans have speculated that Baldwin won’t renew his contract for the series when his option comes up in 2012 – but his co-star is praying he carries on in the role.

McBrayer says, “If he leaves, I think the show leaves. That is a fear I live with on a day-to-day basis over there. I take it with as much a grain of salt as I can, hoping it’s not true.”
“30 Rock” is a television comedy series which is aired by NBC. The title of the show was named after the address of NBC Studios, 30 Rockefeller. Joining Jack McBrayer and Alec Baldwin in the cast ensemble are Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski and Scott Adsit.
Cheyenne Jackson’s Danny took center stage in part two of this 30 Rock event, unleashing Liz’s Dirty Thirties (the callback to her Larry Wilcox fixation from the Christmas episode and all).
Jack again tried to feign attraction for Liz.
Jenna’s narcissism and self-delusion was on display as usual.
Pete’s terrified sprint out of the building when Jenna’s lame attempts to seem young took things to a new extreme was a priceless moment.

James Franco guest starred in the first of two installments of 30 Rock on the 14th of January.
“Klaus and Greta” saw James playing perverted version of himself, which was pretty hysterical.
Franco’s obsession with body pillows (and other objects) gave us nightmares, but no matter.
Liz’s willingness to go along with the disturbing fantasy in the end? Well, that speaks for itself.
The episode also offered Jack being disgusted with Jonathan’s lack of lithe-ness, Kenneth unhitching his pelvis, the staff’s Today Show drinking game, and Tracy declaring Kenneth’s haircut an insult to lesbians.
In the end, pretty standard fare.

Some sneak peeks to the “30 Rock” episode where James Franco will appear as himself have been released. Titled “Klaus and Greta”, the January 14 episode focuses on the faux relationship between James and Jenna which is arranged to cover up his embarrassing secret.

The first clip shows Jack, Liz and Jenna discussing the pro and con of James dating her as publicity stunt while the second one shows James laying out the ground rules for dating including staging a story of how they met. The third and last clips see Jenna telling Liz that she is in love with James and him kissing her after a night out respectively.
Also in the episode, after a wild New Year’s Eve, Jack tries to undo the damage he caused from leaving a drunken message on an ex-lover’s voicemail. After “outing” her sheltered cousin to his family, Liz welcomes him to New York City, while Tracy discovers a newfound respect for women.
